How HL7 Standard Works

HL7 provides the standards and frameworks that allow healthcare data to move seamlessly between different software systems. By addressing both syntactic interoperability (the structure of data) and semantic interoperability (the meaning of data), HL7 ensures that information is not just exchanged but also understood.

HL7 v2

Widely adopted hospital messaging system (lab results, admissions, billing).

CDA

(Clinical Document Architecture)

Standard for structured and shareable clinical documents such as discharge summaries.

FHIR

( Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources )

Modern, API-based standard designed for mobile health apps, telehealth platforms, and nationwide digital health networks.

FHIR is particularly important today because it enables real-time, API-driven data exchange, making healthcare systems more agile and interoperable.

HL7 in India’s Digital Health Ecosystem

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM)

The ABDM, led by India’s National Health Authority, has adopted HL7 FHIR as its core standard for exchanging health information across the country.

ABDM uses FHIR profiles to define machine-readable formats for data such as:

Discharge Summaries Prescriptions Wellness Records

These profiles ensure that hospitals, labs, insurers, and apps can all share and interpret patient data seamlessly.

By standardizing health information, ABDM supports India’s vision of a national Health Information Network (HIN) that enables secure, consistent, and patient-centric data exchange

National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX)

The NHCX initiative standardizes health insurance claims across India, reducing inefficiencies and delays.

Built on HL7 FHIR standards, NHCX provides a standardized communication protocol between:

Payers (insurance companies) Providers (hospitals, clinics) Beneficiaries (patients) Other ecosystem stakeholders

Claims data is exchanged in a machine-readable, verifiable format, making the process faster, more transparent, and consistent nationwide.

Bigger Picture

HL7 standards — especially FHIR — are at the heart of India’s digital health transformation. From ABDM’s Health Information Network to NHCX’s insurance reforms, HL7 enables interoperability at scale, ensuring that India’s healthcare ecosystem moves from fragmented systems to connected, patient-centered care.
